Why is it such an expensive material?
Precious opal is very rare - more rare than diamonds.
Precious opal is rare because the natural processes that create it rarely occur. 95% of opal found by miners is common opal without fire or gem color.
These rings have a spectacular color spectrum, which gives the gemstones an intense and mystical appearance known as opalescence.
These rings are opal doublets. There is no glass or resin over the opal; however, there is a black backing/riser used to raise the opal to fit a ring setting. These in particular have a black obsidian or cork backing.
How to care for doublet opal?
Try not to hit or scratch its surface because the opal can be scratched. Like with any sterling silver jewelry, try not to wash your hands or bathe with it on to keep its luster and shine for a longer period of time.
